We need all the tax revenues we can get from vehicle sales. Encourage and fuel his desire!

dark has his free ticket to the Auto Show as of last night.

I say let the man enjoy the show.

If anyone else wanted that free ticket, you should have replied quickly to my post last night before dark replied. Oh well.

He can go to the show and come back telling us how big of a regret his decision was, only to realize there was something better and maybe cheaper.

Poor dark, he was doing so well! Disillusioned car sales, took a big step/risk for career change, got the dream job of this forum - transit driver ... then this. Poor guy lost a couple of notches on the RS ladder.

I wouldn't underestimate dark though. Look at how adaptable and resilient he is. Honestly not a lot of people can muster the courage to attempt life-changing career pivots, let alone pull them off.

6 months from now he's going to post that he's at U of T doing his masters in financial engineering, then a couple years later he's making 7 figures on Wall Street lol.

I was at the auto show yesterday. Sung Kang was there promoting his new movie. Lots of broccoli heads around, but it's nice to see that young guys are still interested in cars because the narrative is that young people aren't getting licenses these days. I feel sorry for them because there are no cheap cars left.

The M5 touring is quite something in person.

Lots of interest in the test drive area too. I drive ICE cars, so I decided to try an I4 M50. Nice car and the Hans Zimmer soundtrack is interesting.

Will the M5 Touring be available to us in Canada? (Disclaimer: I'm too poor to afford one)

Unrelated: Received an email today from Porsche and they want me back in for seasonal service.

Because my car qualifies for their "Classic" rate, get a load of this:
Service at $189/hour (a $50 reduction from our standard rate)

Yeah, no.

Aren't pleb grade dealerships already charging something like $150/hour? So $189/hr for the Porsche dealership doesn't sound too outrageous...

How does the test drive area work? Do you go outside? Is there a huge ass line up?

The cars are picked up and dropped off inside the convention centre - it's at the back of the autoshow floor. You go to the registration desk and pick a vehicle you want to drive.

GM has its own registration desk, as does BMW. The registration desk will give you an approximate time for your test drive - maybe you'll have to wait an hour or 90 mins. I went there first and registered for my time and then walked around the show.

You get to drive the car along Waterfront Road and you make a loop near Crab Park, just outside of where the road is gated by the Port of Vancouver. So, it's a 5-10 minute experience overall.

I talked the one of the BMW reps and the answer is "yes". The vehicle they brought to the show is unlocked, which is nice of them to do.

Yeah, no.

CG motorsports had a booth and I asked what their shop rate is: $165/hour. $189/hour for a dealer is not bad, TBH. I'm sure Porsche has a lounge with an espresso bar while you wait. On the other hand, if you take your car to an independent, you're often stuck in an industrial area with no lounge, no courtesy shuttle, limited hours, etc. As I've gotten older, I sometimes appreciate the value proposition of a dealer for service.

Crab Park ... !! Is it safe? ... waiver damage to car? Not much you can feel in a 10 mins drive around Gastown.

You're not even driving through Gastown. It's literally Waterfront Road, which is about 1 KM from the convention centre to the Port gate. Since all the cars are EVs, you have maybe a 250m stretch to gun it, which is what the rep in the car with me told me to do.

Still, I'm not sure what you can expect. Most people are getting tickets as freebies, or heavily discounted, so the fact that you can pick from a variety of higher end EVs as part of your auto show experience is pretty good.

They're allowing anyone with a Class 5 over age of 21 to test drive.

Lately I've noticed that the delta between a good indy and the dealer is narrowing to the point I'll pay the difference and have the dealer's warranty.

The dealer service reps can sometimes be aggressive for the uninformed, but if you know what needs to be done, it's not a big difference for a better experience.

Indies get their parts from Lordco, etc. and these days, the quality control on non-OE parts since COVID can be pretty bad.

From past experience, the test drive duration depended on how popular the car was. Popular models like the F-150 Lightning & Hummer EV was a loop down the road and back, while in a Grand Cherokee I drove down Cordova and looped back on Powell.

I'm not surprised if they cut down the test drive experience after the police got involved one year.
